서역만리, 여정의 기록

他生之緣
미후왕 손오공이 삼장을 만나다
애써 얻은 신력으로 오만한 행동을 일삼던 오공이 이르길
"그대가 나를 服屬하게 하는 腹劍을 지녔으니 命을 따르겠소"

서유기는 당나라 초 陳玄奘(600~664)이 실크로드를 거쳐
西域, 天竺으로 불경을 얻으려 가며 겪는 이야기에서 유래했다.
지금으로 보면 중앙아시아와 인도 여행기.
玄奘三藏이라 불린 그는 經藏, 律藏, 論藏 즉 삼장에 능했다.

불교 경전과 계율, 이를 해석하고 연구하는 데 뛰어났던 玄奘.
불교의 경, 율, 론에 탁월한 高僧은 인도 푸슈야브후티로 향했고
645년 여행을 마치고 돌아왔다.
高僧은 大唐西域記에 이 과정을 17년간 정리했다.
여기에 훗날 사람들이 흥미를 돋우고
가상 이야기를 덧붙임으로써 소설로써 재탄생한다.

중국 四大奇書로 평가되는 서유기는 100회로 나뉜다.
첫 부분은 손오공이 천궁에서 말썽을 부리는 이야기.

두 번째 부분은 唐太宗이 자신의 과오로 죽은 이들 때문에
지옥에 다녀와 속죄의 의미로 濟度利生하려는 이야기가 담겼다.
여기서 현장은 삼장으로 불리며 聖地巡禮를 시작한다.

세 번째 부분은 자신의 제자들과 함께 妖怪를 만나고
고난을 겪는 이야기를 서술한다.
여기서부터 손오공과 함께 또 다른 妖怪猪八戒가 등장한다.

天界에 있던 그는 여색과 술로 생긴 불미스런 일로
옥황상제의 벌을 받아 人界로 쫓겨난다.
화과산 수렴동에서 살던 손오공과 같이
저팔계 역시 복릉산 운진동이라는 곳에서
사람을 잡아 먹으며 살아간다.

佛家에서 금지된 다섯 가지 음식과
道家에서 금하는 세 가지 음식을 끊으라는 의미에서
저팔계의 이름은 지어졌다.
불교에서는 오신채라 하여
大蒜, 革蔥, 蘭蔥, 慈蔥, 興蕖를 금한다.

이는 각각 마늘, 파, 부추, 달래, 아위를 의미한다.
나머지는 도교에서 금기하는 육류로 기러기, 개, 뱀장어를 가리킨다.
이처럼 불교와 도교에서는
五葷三厭이라 하여 자극적인 음식을 피하는데
거북이, 뱀, 양파 등도 먹지 않는다.

저팔계는 흥미로운 등장요괴로 탐욕,
혹은 食貪을 떠올린다.
서양에서 쓰여진 단테의 신곡에서도
오만, 분노, 태만, 탐욕, 식탐, 애욕, 질시 등을 주요 죄로 언급하는데
이와 유사성을 지닌다.

세 번째 등장 妖怪는 沙悟淨.
그 역시 천계에서 추방당해 흉측한 妖怪로
삼장을 도와 불경을 구하는데 일조한다.
훗날 여행을 마치고 속죄 받는다.
원숭이와 돼지 妖怪로 그려지는 다른 캐릭터와 달리
사오정이 추정되는 짐승을 정하기는 어렵다.

"성승을 모셔 불경을 얻는 데 일조했으니 그대는 이제 原身의 모습을 되찾으시오.
지금부터 그대는 八部天龍이오."
이들 셋, 이외에도 삼장이 타고 여행하는 백마의 존재가 그려지는데
서해용왕의 아들로서 여정에 함께한다.

삼장을 도운 세 명의 제자는 고승을 태워준 백마와 함께
그간 삶의 과정이 어떻든 불경을 얻는 고난을 견디었기에
旃檀功德佛, 鬬戰勝佛, 淨壇使者, 金身羅漢, 八部天龍로 거듭난다.

이들은 불교의 解脫, 도교의 羽化登仙한 존재인데
종교로써 세상을 구원한다는 세계관이 엿보인다.
실상 소설 도입부에서 玉皇上帝, 釋迦如來, 太上老君 등이 등장하며 시대적 사상이 읽힌다.
백성들 사이에 퍼진 민간신앙까지 합쳐지면서
당시 사고방식 추측에 도움이 된다.

百物而爲之備, 使民知神奸, 故民入川澤山林不逢不若, 魑魅魍魎, 莫能逢之
- 春秋左氏傳
서유기에 등장하는 수많은 妖怪는
食人을 함으로써 영생을 얻으려 한다.

이러한 이야기는 이웃나라 日本에서도 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다.
보이는 그림은 月岡芳年의 浮世繪 가운데 한 작품.

잦은 戰爭과 迷信이 팽배하던 시절, 사람 사이의 다툼은 暴力性이 짙었다.

식인의 행태는 동서양을 막론하고 나타나는 모습으로
이들에 대한 膺懲과 懷柔는 민간설화의 단골소재.

Blend the ingredients

until they form a paste. Sprinkle olive oil into a large skillet so the pan is evenly coated in a light layer.
Stir the spices and sugar in with the paste and cook them for 5 more minutes.

Keep flipping the roe over in the pan to ensure it cooks evenly and doesn't stick.
Cover the roe with an additional paper towel on top to help trap the heat.

Serve
the curry
with rice

Place the roe in the milk mixture and thoroughly coat it before you dip it into the cornmeal and flour mixture. Use a metal or wooden spoon to mix the ingredients together.

Heat the oil

in a large skillet over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes.
Just watch the sauce and stir it every few minutes. Set the plate of roe aside while you cook the rest of the ingredients.

Spray the dish with non-stick cooking spray to prevent the fish from sticking. Watch it closely and turn down the heat to medium if needed.
Pour a little more oil into the pan if necessary and add the chopped up onions as well.

timer for each side

Pour water into the pan until it comes up to the middle of the roe's sides. Set a timer to remind you when the fish has marinated for the full 30 minutes.
